MEETING MINUTES FROM TSKG TAMIL NEW YEAR (AND COVID-19) VIRTUAL MEETUP ON APR 19 2020
Hi all, Hope you and family are staying healthy and safe. Thirty (30) of enthusiastic adults + kids committed their time to have fun and at same time come together to brainstorm ideas during these unprecedented times during COVID-19. Big thanks to all those who participated and helped us out!
In addition, thanks to all who had volunteered for TSKG over the past few years! National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, 2020 #cheerstovolunteers
PS: The power of TSKG (no border when it comes to staying connected as tight families) is reflected when you see familiar faces who moved to Vancouver but still wanted to contribute…thanks Unni, Karthiyayini & family!
Tamil New Year celebration started with kids dancing organized by YP Dance Studios. Thanks to Gaja and Pavi for your enthusiasm.Kids loved it!
Kids presented their creative art work created during school closure. Impressed with talent and learnings from Raj (Chak de Canada team)!
Kids conducted online social games engaging everyone including adults which illustrated the leadership skills.
Everyone shared their personal experiences on handling kids and activities during the tough times/ COVID-19 lockdown.
Discussed volunteering activities to be contributed by TSKG to help our community and broader community within Canada and the rest of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.
QUESTIONS CAME UP DURING DISCUSSION:
Any novel idea to help first/second responders and their families?
Food, medicine and other necessity items delivery options to needy and elderly
How to help senior citizens as they are the most affected?
What can be done to help kids during this pandemic?
What we can offer with (or without) government assistance/ funding?
How can we help the community by working remotely and onsite but still staying safe?
INITIAL LIST OF IDEAS CAME UP DURING DISCUSSION:
Create an online platform to engage kids and senior citizens.
Our initiative was recognized by the Mayor of Mississauga: https://www.facebook.com/bonniecrombie/photos/pb.28672880370.-2207520000../10163342233770371/?type=3&theater
e-Chat for kids with different age groups 7 – 9; 10 – 12; 13 – 15. These virtual meetings may build soft skills (leadership, presentation and communication skills) and help being connected and stay in touch with their friends in spite of social-distancing.
Need volunteers to facilitate this meeting (potential timings during lunch time at work 12-1 or post 5 pm) it. We had already surfaced this idea last month and did conduct one pilot and learnt on how to execute. Please register at
Engage Elderly. Any elderly in your family would like to participate in e-Chat to keep them occupied and kill the boredom, please register at.
Improve physical fitness and health for elderly. Arun will conduct a ‘FREE Brain gym’ session for elderly.
Identify potential volunteering services that can be offered as TSKG-ians. We created this database for internal purposes only and data will not be shared with anyone. (Example: during a meeting with the Mayor, Vietnam community offering tailoring service to stitch free masks to the community. Muslim community donated funds to hospital etc.)
Our next meeting will be scheduled this Sunday, Apr 26 (between 2-4 pm). We will identify TSKG – COVID TASK FORCE who can work with various streams to generate ideas and also help with planning through execution. Post we identify, analyze and prioritize the ideas, we will propose the creative solution to the government and potentially seek the COVID emergency fund which will help us to contribute a lot more to the broader community at large. Please think through ideas and share them with the team on Sunday. Feel free to review the fund details below.
Save the day for May 10th! TKSG Mother’s Day ‘Virtual Hug and Share Love’ event
